About Jane Austen helped invent the novel, but surprisingly little is known about her life. The only biographical writing that survives are a few letters sent to her sister Cassandra. We do know that Austen believed in her work. She carried the financial risk to publish her first novel, Sense and Sensibility. The writing captivated young aristocrats and made her financially independent. And with over 20 million copies sold to date, Austen continues to influence how we tell stories today.

Did you know? Jane Austen wrote the Juvenilia – with comic stories like Lady Susan – in notebooks from age 11 to 17. Her sister Cassandra, a drawer, helped illustrate the budding author’s works.
