About  Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was born in New Spain, present day Mexico. She educated herself by secretly reading through her grandfather’s library. The young thinker's intelligence brought her fame, so much so that New Spain’s vicereine became her patron. De la Cruz knew that married women held less education liberties. She became a nun to maintain her autonomy, ensuring that she could read and write without a husband’s permission. 

Did you know? De la Cruz self-taught several languages. At age nine she was well versed in Greek logic. At age thirteen she taught Latin to children around her. She even mastered the native Aztec language Nahuatl, in which she also wrote poetry.
