George Eliot
Time 1819-1880
Location Coventry and London, England
About Marian Evans (1819-1880) used the pen name George Eliot to publish wildly successful novels. Her upbringing in what she called ‘fat central England’ was enlivened by a ferocious appetite for reading. After the death of her father she decided to become a working woman in London. The writer became known for her progressive values, inventive language, and deep psychological knowledge.
Did you know? George Eliot did not need a man’s name to publish. She adopted the pseudonym to protect her novels from her own reputation as a progressive, radical newspaper editor.
