About Xue Tao was born during the Tang dynasty to a minor government official. Later, registers record her as a courtesan and official government hostess. Xue impressed high ranking officials and dignitaries with her poetry and wit. It was an incredible feat, for most women of the age were illiterate. Her achievements earned her higher positions and, eventually, the opportunity to live independently. Only around 100 poems survive, but their carefully crafted images bring forth a poet of wide learning, humor, and stoutly earned independence.

Did you know? Xue supported herself in late life by making and selling artisanal paper.
